The
Kentucky Thoroughblades AHL team was owned by Kentucky Hockey Associates Inc.
and played in the American Hockey League for five seasons in Lexington,
Kentucky from 1996 to 2001. They played in Rupp Arena (capacity 21,300) and
practiced at Lexington Ice Center.
The
first game was played against the Carolina Monarchs in front of 17,503
fans. The all-time attendance
record for the Tblades in Rupp Arena was 18,394. They made the playoffs in each of the first 4 years of the
franchise, with two of those years in the finals.
The team colors were Spruce, Plum, Silver & Black. The team was affiliate with the San Jose Sharks (NHL) and the New Orleans Brass (ECHL). The team Mascot was named "Lucky".
The team was sold the San Jose Sharks and moved to Cleveland for the 2001-2002 season. The
team was renamed the Cleveland Barons and plays in Gund Arena.
